Illegal timber/climate change

After many months of delay, the EU agriculture council has finally reached a position on new legislation against the trade of illgeal timber and timber products. Shamefully, it does not support the strong measures advocated by the EU Parliament and its Green rapporteur Caroline Lucas.

Climate change

As EU heads of state and government start arriving at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen, the fate of the talks is in the balance. All the main political issues remain open, with the EU failing to advance its position and worrying reports emerging that it is scaling back its ambitions.

Sakharov Prize

Toy safety

A year after the Greens/EFA Group voted against rushed-through toy safety legislation, a German study has concluded that the rules are inadequate. The Greens are calling for better protection against toxic substances and independent safety checks on toys for children.

EU summit

EU leaders have again missed an opportunity to reclaim Europe's leading role in the UN climate negotiations. Fast-track financing for developing countries has been agreed, but no progress was made on longer term financing and there was no commitment to 30% emissions reductions.

Copenhagen climate summit

The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament will have a strong presence at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
