Climate protection: act locally!

Each day municipalities make decisions which will protect, or not, our climate. Switch to green power, investments in eco-buildings or insulation of older buildings, development of local soft mobility schemes: local actors can make key contributions in tackling climate change!

EU transport policies

Four years after EU enlargement and almost 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, rail connections to eastern Europe are still in a bad state. Today it takes 60 hours to travel by train from Berlin to Tallinn while in 1935 it only took 27 hours!

Agrofuel target

The EEA scientific committee made public an opinion on the environmental impact of agrofuel use in Europe. It recommends a new, comprehensive study on the subject and a suspension of the 10% taget of agrofuels in transport by 2020.

Carbon emissions

A latest study by the US "Earth Policy Institute" shows that worldwide CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are accelerating rapidly. Emissions grew 3.1% a year between 2000 and 2006, more than twice the rate of growth during the 1990s!

Climate Package

Today and tomorrow the committees for Environment on one hand and for Energy on the other hand start the talks of the MEPs on the Commission's proposals. The new directives on renewables, the Emission Trading Scheme or Carbon Capture and Storage will be among the heated debates.

Development and climate change

The committee on Development of the European Parliament organised a hearing on "Building a Global Climate Challenge Alliance between the EU and Developing countries". The different speakers highlighted the urgent need to integrate all climate related topics into development policies.

Situation in Tibet

Greens/EFA firmly condemn the brutal repression by the Chinese security forces against Tibetan demonstrators and call upon the European Union and the Member States to seriously consider common actions vis-à-vis the People's Republic of China in case the situation does not improve.

"Chernobyl Day"

At the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe on 26 April 2008, the Greens will take part in the international day of action against nuclear energy. It will be once more the occasion to show that nuclear is not a solution to climate change.
