Making polluters responsible for climate protection

The vast majority of the Environment Committee's MEPs have just asserted themselves against the Conservatives and voted in favour of strict CO2 standards for trucks and now have a solid position for negotiations with the Council and the European Commission, in "trilogue", on a regulation for "CO2 emission standards for new heavy goods vehicles".

CO2 emissions from trucks are to be reduced by 20 percent by 2025 and by 35 percent by 2030. This position goes beyond the proposal of the European Commission, which had demanded savings of 15 percent by 2025 and 30 percent by 2030. MEPs will vote on the negotiating mandate in the plenary session from 12 to 15 November.

Bas Eickhout, Greens/EFA rapporteur of the European Parliament, commented:

"Today's majority is making the big polluters of the road responsible for more climate protection. Truck manufacturers should be rewarded for clean trucks. The European Union must move out of the slow lane to become a pioneer in climate protection in road traffic. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has made it very clear that we cannot waste any more time on climate protection".
