European carmarkers failling to deliver lower carbon emissions for new cars
The emissions of new cars from European producers slipped to 160 grams per kilometre on average in 2006, which is still far away from the voluntary goal of 140 g/km by 2008. It confirms that the car industry will not meet the goal it pledged to the European Commission in 1998.
This survey comes after the Commission said that it would propose rules to force carmakers to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars to an average of 130g/km by 2012. But it as still to make proposals in the coming weeks on how to implement its plans. The European Parliament is now debatting on this issue of car emissions with a vote in its plenary session of October.
