The Situation in Mali

Press Conference by EFA MEP François Alfonsi

When: Tuesday 10 December at 16h00

Where: Press Room LOW N-1/201, European Parliament, Strasbourg

MEPs François Alfonsi and Jean-Jacob Bicep, members of the Greens/EFA Group, both of whom have taken an active interest in the situation in Mali, will respond to the address of the President of Mali Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to the European Parliament on Tuesday.

While the Ouagadougou agreement, signed in June 2013 by the Malian government, the MLNA and the HCUA , foresaw finding a political solution in Northern Mali within 60 days of the presidential election, nothing has really progressed since the election of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, four months ago.

Instead, similar problems resurface in a worrying way :

- Kidnaping and assassination of two French journalists in Kidal, a terrorist attack on the French army in Menaka,

- Malian army abuses in Menaka (MLNA combatants executed by Malian soldiers while they were handcuffed), shots fired on a crowd of unarmed demonstrators in Kidal Airport, killing one person and injuring several.

Both MEPs want to draw the attention of the Malian President to the urgency to resume dialogue. The MNLA spokesperson in Europe has also been invited to react to the President of Mali's speech.
