Rule of law debate & LGBTI photo action

Quote from Terry Reintke MEP

Today, the European Parliament will debate the rule of law and attacks against the LGBTI community in Poland. The report: "Determination of a clear risk of a serious breach by the Republic of Poland of the rule of law" will be voted on this Thursday.

Ahead of the State of the European Union speech on Wednesday, and in solidarity with the LGBTI community, there will be a photo action with MEPs by the LGBTI Intergroup at the Altiero Spinelli entrance, in front of the European Parliament, at 13.00 on Tuesday (15/09).

Terry Reintke MEP, Greens/EFA shadow rapporteur on the rule of law in Poland and Co-President of the LGBTI Intergroup, comments:

"The rule of law in EU countries is not an “à la carte” menu. Member States do not get to choose whether to follow it, this is one of the fundamental principles upon which the Union is founded. We cannot tolerate the continued attacks on the LGBTI community in Poland. Our cross-group support goes to the Polish LGBTI community and activists who are facing an insurmountable pressure, not least because of a shameful presidential election campaign won on the back of fragile homo- and transphobia. As the European Parliament, we strongly condemn the repression of the LGBTI community and ask again to the European Commission to open infringement procedures not only on the basis of rule of law, but of European values, as codified in Article 2 TEU."

The debate on Poland can be viewed live today from 17.30, here: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/plenary/en/home.html
