Greens/EFA Proposal for a Fair and Efficient Asylum System in Europe

New Paper

Today, in view of the European Commission’s upcoming proposal for a new Pact on Migration and Asylum, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament has just released a new paper titled "Proposal for a fair and efficient asylum system in Europe.” This paper calls for increased support for the willingness of cities and municipalities to receive refugees and asylum seekers, a fair distribution of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union, and compulsory compensation payments from EU governments that refuse European solidarity.

Tineke Strik MEP, Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, comments:

“The EU has been in a deadlock for years about the distribution of asylum seekers. With this plan we show how we can ensure the right to asylum and, at the same time, prevent lengthy asylum procedures at the external borders.

"At this moment, the pressure on countries at the external borders is simply too big and disproportionate. This immediately affects asylum seekers, which is clearly shown by the inhumane conditions in the overcrowded camps on the Greek islands. With our proposal, we distribute responsibilities fairly among EU countries. That way, we can quickly provide clarity to asylum seekers and diminish the pressure on specific countries.”

Damian Boeselager MEP, Volt Europa MEP in the Greens/EFA, member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and Shadow Rapporteur on the Regulation establishing the European Union Agency for Asylum, comments:

"We must make full use of the great potential for solidarity found within the European Union. The willingness of many cities and municipalities to accept refugees must not fail because of bureaucratic hurdles.

"EU governments that refuse this call for European solidarity must then make a financial contribution to the reception of refugees and asylum seekers in other EU countries. European solidarity cannot mean that the burden is carried by only a few, but requires solidarity by all.

"The future European Union Agency for Asylum must play a key role in the allocation of asylum-seekers and management of allocation procedures. This way, we will have a truly common European approach to shared responsibility and solidarity.”
