Greens/EFA call on action instead of empty declarations
Climate emergency
Today, a group of MEPs from S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA and GUE tabled an amendment for the resolution ahead of the UN Climate Conference COP25 to ask for the declaration of climate emergency on a European level. The resolution will be voted on next week. The Greens/EFA group asked for an additional debate on the topic.
The European Parliament should not only officially declare climate emergency, but also agree on a number of concrete measures to make the declaration tangible, says Bas Eickhout, Climate spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group:
"Following the scientific reports on the climate and biodiversity crisis and all the recent climate related natural disasters, it is more than time to officially declare climate and environmental emergency on a European level and to agree on concrete measures of how to reply to this urgency. It is good to see that other groups in the European Parliament finally take those issues seriously and support the declaration of climate and environmental emergency in the European Union.
"We now expect from the other groups to not only make nice declarations, but to agree on concrete actions like the increase of the EU 2030 climate target to 65% and no more EU money for fossil fuels in the MFF. All groups have to push the new European Commission to come up with a new proposal for the Common Agriculture policy that contributes to the objective to reach climate neutrality and to halting biodiversity loss. Only if the EU comes up with these concrete and ambitious measures within the next months all the commitments to save the climate and biodiversity are worth the paper they are written on."
