Greens/EFA group welcomes Portuguese MEP Rui Tavares as new member
Portuguese MEP Rui Tavares has announced his intention to join the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament. Mr Tavares, who was elected in 2009 as an independent on the 'Bloco de Esquerda' list in Portugal, previously sat with the GUE/NGL group. Mr Tavares first contacted the group this Monday, 20 June.
Green/EFA MEPs have already had a close working relationship with Rui Tavares, with Mr Tavares sharing the Greens/EFA goal of working towards a progressive, sustainable and fair Europe, and the group is happy to welcome him on board.
Gaining a representative from an additional member state, Portugal, is a welcome development for the Greens/EFA group and for communicating Green politics in the region.
Rui Tavares will officially join the Greens/EFA Group on 27 June 2011.
