EU leaders must stand firm on support for Ukraine & candidate countries

European Council summit

Today, EU leaders will meet in Brussels for the European Council summit, which will focus on Ukraine, enlargement and agriculture policy.

Ahead of the EUCO, Greens/EFA Group President, Philippe Lamberts MEP, comments:

“The EU has a responsibility to our neighbour, friend and future member, Ukraine. We must put petty political squabbles aside and stand steadfast in our support both in Europe and across the Atlantic. We need to better coordinate our efforts to supply Ukraine with the tools and resources it needs to win this war.

“We must send a clear signal to all future members that Europe is ready to take on its responsibility to peace in the Western Balkans and the Eastern neighbourhood. By moving forward on the accession process we can prove that our Union is built on the values of peace, democracy and solidarity.

“The European Commission's hastily proposed revision of the CAP, presented as a response to farmers' protests, defies common sense and is being done without any impact study or serious consultation of stakeholders. What farmers want is a decent income and less red tape, not more environmental destruction. By putting nature at risk, we're putting our food security at risk, and we're putting farmers' health and livelihood in danger.”
