EU Environment Council and climate law

Quote from Bas Eickhout MEP

Tomorrow, EU Environment Ministers will discuss the on-going negotiations around the European Climate Law. Trilogue negotiations with the European Parliament and Council are stalling, the Council has so far rejected an independent scientific climate council, as demanded by the European Parliament, and is blocking progress on the 2030 emissions target. The Parliament is calling for 60% fewer CO2 emissions by 2030, while the Council and the Commission are sticking to the 55% target. The Greens/EFA group are calling for a 65% reduction in emissions by 2030.

Bas Eickhout MEP, Greens/EFA Vice Chair of the Environment Committee, comments:

"We are at a standstill in the negotiations, Member States are refusing to discuss the need to raise the 2030 climate target. We are going round in circles on the proposals for an independent scientific climate council and a CO2 budget. If this stalling by EU governments continues, it will amount to an irresponsible political failure by the Member States.

"The measures supported by the Parliament are the bare minimum that we must do to keep global warming within the limits of what our environment can take. The ministers must work together instead of obstructing the European Climate Law, which is crucial for both our future and that of the planet. A strong and effective Climate Law is vital to ensure that the EU plays a leading role at the upcoming UN climate summit in Glasgow."
