Diana Riba i Giner Elected as President of the EFA Group in the European Parliament

Brussels— The European Free Alliance (EFA) Group in the European Parliament is proud to announce the election of Diana Riba i Giner as the new President of the EFA Group. This marks a significant milestone for the EFA Group as it continues its commitment to advocating for social justice and for the rights of stateless nations, regions, and minorities across Europe.

Diana Riba i Giner, born in Barcelona in 1975, has a degree in pedagogy from the University of Barcelona.

Before entering politics, Diana Riba worked extensively in the cultural sector. She held various positions in publishing and literary management, where she promoted Catalan literature, supported emerging writers, and owned a bookshop in Sant Cugat, Catalonia. From 2008-2017 she was a member and treasurer of the Catalan Council for Children’s and Young People’s Books and from 2017 Riba is also a member of the Catalan Civil Rights Association (ACDC).

Riba’s political journey began with her active involvement in civic movements advocating for democracy and human rights in Catalonia. She became particularly prominent in the fight for the rights of political prisoners and exiles, following the aftermath and repression of the Catalan independence referendum in 2017.

In the 2019 European Parliament elections, Riba i Giner was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) within the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) group.

As an MEP, she has been a vocal advocate for human rights, linguistic and cultural rights social justice, and self-determination. She has served on several parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), the Committee on Culture and Education(CULT) and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM). She was also elected Vice-President of the Committee of Inquiry to investigate the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware (PEGA).

The European Free Alliance (EFA) Group in the European Parliament brings together MEPs who advance the cause for self-determination of Europe's stateless nations, regions, and minorities. Under Diana Riba i Giner's leadership, the EFA Group will continue to champion these causes, advocating for a Europe that values its diversity and works collectively towards a greener, fairer future.

Diana Riba i Giner, President of the EFA Group said:

"I am deeply honoured to be elected as President of the EFA Group. Our work in the European Parliament is crucial for ensuring that the voices of Europe's diverse regions and stateless nations are heard and their right to self-determination respected. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to advance our shared vision of a more inclusive and democratic Europe.”

“We are here to be an unequivocal voice against those forces that want our rights to regress. We will continue to work for self-determination and for social justice. We are working towards a feminist, fairer and greener Europe. A Europe of all peoples and all nations.”

“As EFA Group we will work tirelessly to defend and push forward socially brave policies that promote a more feminist and equal society. Fighting for progressive policies and an equal society is the best weapon against the far-right and its populist narrative.”
