Terricabras questions Juncker on self-determination
Press release from the EFA Group in the European Parliament
Catalan MEP Josep-Maria Terricabras, President of the EFA Group in the European Parliament, has asked the European Commission President designate, Jean-Claude Juncker for his views on the forthcoming independence votes in Catalonia and Scotland.
Mr Terricabras noted these two nations would decide their own constitutional futures in the coming months, by different but legitimate democratic means. He asked Mr Juncker how he would respond to the Scottish referendum and Catalan consultation.
The exchange of views took place as Mr Juncker visited the Greens/EFA Group in Brussels to make the case for his candidacy ahead of a vote by MEPs in Strasbourg on 15 July.
Mr Juncker replied that he would respect the outcome of these individual processes, but that it was not for him to intervene in internal debates in Member States.
During the course of the hearing the former Luxembourg PM also affirmed his personal opposition to fracking and expressed his support for a minimum income guarantee in individual EU member states.
