Member States' climate plans need far more ambition

Quote from Bas Eickhout

Today, the European Commission has released its assessment of EU Member States' National Energy and Climate Plans, and found that national governments need to step up their ambitions to meet EU climate and energy targets and be in line with the Paris Agreement.

Bas Eickhout, climate policy spokesperson for the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament comments:

"It's quite clear that EU Member States do not take climate action seriously and even the Commission, which is not renowned for its ambition, recognizes this. Unfortunately, we simply don't have the time to waste on inaction on climate. The Commission's assessment shows that Member States do not even aim to achieve the agreed 2030 targets, which we know are not adequate to address the urgency of climate breakdown and will not meet the EU's obligations under the Paris Agreement, as recently pointed out by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

"When EU leaders meet this week, they must take the opportunity to go the extra mile and ensure that we reach net-zero emissions way before 2050 and step up our efforts for 2030. EU governments need to reach for the moon if we are to save the Earth."
