Greens/EFA call on Council to abide by agreement and adopt the Corporate Sustainability and Due Diligence Directive
Tomorrow, the Coreper is expected to vote on the trilogue outcome of the Corporate Sustainability and Due Diligence Directive negotiations. All of a sudden, several Member States, including Germany, have signalled that they will not support the agreement, despite the European Parliament having accommodated all of their demands during negotiations. The Greens/EFA call on the Council to stand by its agreement and give the green light to the Due Diligence Directive.
Heidi Hautala, Greens/EFA MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Shadow rapporteur in the Legal Affairs committee, comments:
“It has been heartening to see how a wide range of businesses and civil society around Europe have in recent days rallied in support of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. This groundbreaking legislation will guarantee a level playing field for companies and help the EU to meet its climate and human rights commitments. And crucially, it will give victims of grievous corporate abuses a credible chance of pursuing justice.”
“During tomorrow's vote in the Coreper, the credibility of the EU’s decision-making process is at stake. The text at hand is already a compromise. To reach an agreement in the negotiations, the European Parliament was willing to accommodate several demands of Member States, including Germany, which has now decided to abstain. Rejecting the agreement now would not be fair play.”
