Deal reached on f-gases makes Europe a world leader on fighting super greenhouse gases

Today, negotiators between the European Parliament, Council and Commission have reached an agreement on the F-gases Regulation, which will see the faster phase out of these harmful gases. Fluorinated gases are super greenhouse gases that have an impact on the climate often thousands of times greater than CO2. F-gases are used in refrigeration, heat pumps and the electricity grid among other things. 

Bas Eickhout MEP, Greens/EFA Vice President and Rapporteur for the European Parliament on the file comments: 

"F-gases are relatively unknown but have a huge impact on the climate. With today's agreement, we will ensure that we will get rid of these super greenhouse gases soon.

“We are sending a very clear message to the market: it’s time to switch to cleaner alternatives. This is not only crucial for the climate, but is also good for European industry, which will remain at the forefront of producing greener products. 

“Heat pumps are essential for Europe's energy transition. This deal ensures that manufacturers of heat pumps will switch to climate-friendly alternatives in the coming years."
