Greens/EFA co-presidents Philippe Lamberts and Ska Keller respond to reports that the EU will be exempt from tariffs on steel and aluminium.
"The Commission has done well to protect European interests and avoid EU exports being subject to US tariffs. However, that doesn’t alter the fact that Trump’s actions are illegal and his pretext of protecting national security is completely false. The EU must be clear that it will not negotiate under threat of continued bullying tactics.
"Just because the EU has been given a pass for now does not mean we should be silent at the WTO. Trump’s actions need to be challenged, or the whole multilateral system will be put at risk. We need to stand up for the values of fair trade and avoid further escalation between the US and China."
