EU countries must not shirk their shared responsibilities towards refugees in Europe

Refugee relocation

The European Commission has announced that it will start infringement proceedings against Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic in response to their boycotting of the relocation of refugees from Greece and Italy to other Member States.

Greens/EFA co-president Ska Keller, comments:

"We must not allow EU Member States to shirk their shared responsibilities towards refugees in Europe. It is right that the European Commission is listening to the calls of the European Parliament and taking action against Member States that boycott the relocation of refugees.

"While EU countries such as Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic refuse to take refugees, the camps in Greece and Italy are still overcrowded. This is an intolerable situation. We must achieve greater solidarity in European refugee policy."
