GREEN INSIGHT INTO EU FOOD POLICY
Plenary vote object to three new GM soybean authorisations
Last 3rd February, the Parliament voted in plenary against the authorisations of the use of 3 glyphosate-tolerant GM soybeans[1]. Glyphosate is the active substance of the most used herbicide in the world: Round up, commercialised by Monsanto.
The vote in plenary echoes the vote of the Environment committee on 21st January.
Thanks to this result, members of the Parliament, rejected the marketing of one product from Bayer and 2 from Monsanto. This way MEPs spoke the voice of the majority of EU citizens against GMOs.
Glyphosate health risks ignored as Commission proposes long reapproval for use in EU
The European Commission is proposing the reapproval of the controversial substance glyphosate, for use in the EU for a further 15 years. Glyphosate is used in the most used herbicide in the world commercialised by Monsanto: Round Up. The draft implementing act, published by the European Commission, was made available to the European Parliament on 24 February. It foresees the reapproval of glyphosate until 2031 and will be the subject of a meeting of EU government officials on 7-8 March at which they are expected to give their opinion. Greens MEPs call EU governments to stay out of this perverted logic and oppose the reapproval of glyphosate at their meeting next week.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Health vs. wealth - Why what we eat could be killing us – and why no one cares
This is a strange story, a tale that at first glance appears to be a work of pure fiction, of things that cannot possibly happen in real life. And yet every single word of it is true: from the bullying big corporations to the timid and toothless legislators; from the shocking evidence of widespread use of dangerous ingredients in our food to the staggering display of arrogance and indifference on the part of those in the know. Above all, it is a tale of typical 21st century law-making – where lobbies rule the roost and even public health is of secondary interest to the pursuit of profit.
