Alternatives to detention and non-custodial measures

Live Webinar hosted by EFA MEP Diana Riba i Giner

Live Webinar

Tuesday, 13th of July - from 4pm to 5pm

Interpretation - EN / FR / CAT / ES

The use of non-custodial measures as an alternative to detention is relevant both as a means to reduce prison overcrowding and as a tool to facilitate the social reintegration of convicted persons and thus to reduce recidivism. However, research seems to show that such positive effects only follow when the use of alternatives to detention is a part of a broader strategy of structural penal reforms, including decriminalisation and diverting strategies: the introduction of alternatives, alone, can actually have the opposite effect of increasing the prison population, due to the so-called “net-widening” effect.

Speakers:

  • Diana Riba i Giner, host and Greens/EFA MEP
  • Florence Laufer, Director of Prison Insider
  • Catherine Heard, Director of the World Prison Research Programme at Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research
  • Matylda Pogorzelska, Project Manager and Legal Research in the Fundamental Rights Agency
  • Alessio Scandurra, Coordinator of the Italian and European Prison Observatory
  • Saskia Bricmont: Greens/EFA MEP
