We must seize this opportunity to strengthen European democracy
Transnational lists
The European Parliament's committee on Constitutional Affairs today adopted a report on the establishment of transitional lists for elections to the European Parliament. These proposals will be voted on in the February plenary. The establishment of transnational lists requires unanimity in the Council.
Greens/EFA shadow rapporteur Pascal Durand comments:
"We have just taken an important step forward in the process of creating a single European constituency. Until now, European elections have struggled to advance a genuinely EU-wide public debate. Giving European citizens the opportunity to elect candidates who represent them beyond national boundaries is the best way to foster a sense of belonging to a community with a shared destiny. We hope that the European Parliament will back these plans in February and that the Council will seize this unique opportunity to strengthen European democracy."
