Diana Riba calls on the EU Commission to implement the PEGASUS findings.

EFA MEP Diana Riba i Giner intervened in plenary today on the debate of the need for a coordinated European response and legislative framework on intrusive spyware, based on the PEGA inquiry committee recommendations.

MEP Riba was the Vice-President of the PEGA inquiry, committee whose findings were already voted on in Parliament last July, she called on the Commission to implement the recommendations of the PEGA committee to prevent the misuse of spyware and protect people’s rights.

The Catalan MEP informed that Amnesty International recently revealed more people were falling victim of misused spyware, hence the urgency needed for the Commission to act and accept the Parliament findings.

Diana Riba i Giner, EFA MEP and Vice-President of the PEGA Committee, said:

“The trade and use of spyware, both within and outside the EU, must be strictly regulated urgently. And it is essential that these are not exempted from the application of the Due Diligence Directive on corporate sustainability.”

“ Until we have this framework and these safeguards, the abusive use of these technologies must be stopped immediately.
And we must remind Member States that they have until the end of the year to comply with the requirements contained in the report adopted by this House.”

“We cannot allow citizens to continue to be attacked with this impunity. Ladies and gentlemen of the Commission, ladies and gentlemen of the Council, we have done our work in this House.

“ We are waiting for you. Do not delay. Our rights are at stake”.
