Climate change policies
Climate change policies improve air pollution, energy security and competitiveness
The study says that strict climate policies could:
- Reduce European oil and gas imports (by 30% and 10% respectively) and therefore strengthen security of supply;
- Cut particulate matter emmissions by 35%, i.e. help to meet air pollution targets;
- Boost technological developments and lead to EU leadership in some areas.
Those positive impacts of tough climate change policies have also monetary benefits.
For instance, less air pollution is likely to reduce health costs through a lower number of chronic bronchitis or absence from work due to illness.
It is estimated that the monetarized benefits seem to equal the costs of greenhouse gas abatement.
