Paris attacks

Common statement of Greens/EFA group and European Green Party

Common statement by the co-presidents of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, Rebecca Harms and Philippe Lamberts, and the co-chairs of the European Green Party, Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni:

We were shocked when we heard of the terrible terrorist attack against the people of Paris last night and we woke up this morning with great sadness.

We, European Greens, want to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Our solidarity goes out to the people of Paris and the whole French nation. These attacks do not concern French citizens alone but all of us, as Europeans.

The best response to terrorism is more democracy and openness, as the Norwegian Prime Minister said after the tragic attack in Norway and his words should guide us in our reaction to this tragedy.

We will not abandon our shared values: liberté, egalité, fraternité.

It is impossible to return to business as usual after this terrible tragedy. We will join our French friends in their mourning and in expressing the strongest condemnation of these attacks and the determination to mobilise the citizens of Europe in defence of our shared values and of democracy.”
