Mandatory quotas only way to ensure low level of women in management positions addressed
The European Commission today presented its progress report on women in economic decision-making positions, announcing its intention to launch a consultation with a view to introducing legislation, including provisions for boardroom quotas. The Greens welcomed the proposals and urged the Commission to push forward with legislation. Commenting after the presentation, Green MEP Marije Cornelissen said:
"Mandatory quotas are the only way to ensure the underrepresentation of women in management positions is finally addressed. As this year's 'progress' report has shown, the voluntary approach has not and will not dismantle old boy's clubs. Despite higher levels of qualification, women are not being allowed to break through. We supported Commissioner Reding in her commitment to come forward with binding legislation if self-regulation did not bring results and are counting on her to make good on this commitment as soon as possible."
