Turkish constitutional referendum
Turkish vote is a further step on the path to EU integration
A partial reform of the Turkish constitution has passed, with 58% of the vote in favour. Commenting on the result, Green MEP Hélène Flautre, Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, today said:
"This vote confirms the democratic changes taking place in Turkey. This is encouraging news that confirms the ability of Turkey to transform itself and advance further towards accession to the EU. It is now up to the government to take this process even further. It has acquired today even greater legitimacy, but also greater responsibility, to engage in the comprehensive constitutional reform needed to build Turkey's democratic future. To take this path, it is imperative that they reach out to all the civil and political actors that they have so far failed to convince."
