EP recognises importance of smart grids but underlines need for data protection
The European Parliament today voted in favour of a report by Green MEP Elisabeth Schroedter on the role smart grids at regional and local level. Commenting after the vote, Elisabeth Schroedter said:
"The European Parliament has today underlined the crucial role of smart grids in the move towards a flexible and decentralised energy supply, which is stable, secure and affordable, as well as tackling climate change and empowering citizens to take an active role in energy production and consumption. The overwhelming majority in favour of this report sends a strong signal.
"Despite the indisputable benefits of smart grids at regional and local level, there are legitimate concerns as regards the data processing required for implementing intelligent energy systems. These data protection concerns should be addressed, notably through regulatory provisions to ensure data cannot be transferred to third parties. This will ensure widespread support for the uptake of smart grids.
"The report calls on the European Commission to address inconsistencies with EU regional policy and state aid rules, which militate against attempts to promote smart grids. The ban on cross-financing under EU state aid law prevents regions and municipalities from storing excess electricity in charging stations for electric vehicles, with a view to using it for bus services. Hopefully, the Commission will now address this."
