EPP to debate Fidesz

Quote from Judith Sargentini

On the news that the member parties from the European Peoples Party have request a debate on expelling the Hungarian party Fidesz, Judith Sargentini, Greens/EFA rapporteur on the rule of law in Hungary report comments:

"While it's welcome that a few EPP parties are finally coming around to recognising that Viktor Orbán's assault on democracy is not in line with European values, it's too little, too late. The fact that the EPP has sheltered Fidesz for so long has only emboldened Orbán's autocratic efforts. Frankly, it's sad that the EPP is only now discussing Fidesz after they put up anti-Juncker posters around Hungary, and not when they forced a university out of the country, or shut down newspapers, or attacked civil society. If Fidesz retains its seat at the EPP table, then the group and Manfred Weber will prove willing enablers of attacks against the very values on which the EU is based."
