Diana Riba i Giner Elected Chair of EU-Central America Parliamentary Committee

Brussels, [3rd of October,2024] – Today, EFA MEP Diana Riba i Giner was officially elected as Chair of the EU-Central America Parliamentary Committee. This appointment reflects her commitment to fostering stronger political, economic, and social ties between the European Union and Central America, building on her extensive track record of advocacy for human rights, women’s rights, and democratic principles in the region.

As the newly elected Chair, Riba i Giner will oversee the parliamentary committee’s work on key issues, including trade agreements, human rights, migration, and climate cooperation. Her leadership aims to enhance dialogue between the European Union and Central American countries, ensuring that policies promote mutual development, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

Riba i Giner, a long-standing advocate for human rights, has been especially active in Mexico, where she has worked extensively to support vulnerable communities, address gender inequality, and defend democratic freedoms. Her experience in Mexico will be instrumental in shaping her work on the committee, ensuring that regional collaboration remains people-centered and inclusive.

The EU-Central America Parliamentary Committee plays a vital role in maintaining and deepening political and economic cooperation between both regions, particularly through the EU’s Association Agreement with Central America. Riba i Giner’s leadership will be key in addressing emerging challenges and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in the years ahead.

Diana Riba i Giner, Chair of the EU-Central America Parliamentary Committee and President of the EFA Group in the European Parliament said:

"As some of you already know, over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of working with the Mexican Delegation, which has given me the opportunity to closely understand the challenges and opportunities in our collaboration with Latin America. I believe this valuable experience will serve me well as I begin this new role leading the Central American Delegation."

"We share deep bonds with this region—culturally, economically, socially, and of course, politically. We have a duty to continue strengthening these relationships so that they benefit both sides, working together to build more just, prosperous, and sustainable societies, with the rule of law and human rights as fundamental pillars."

"It is important to remember that this past April, the Association Agreement with the countries in the region was ratified, positioning Central America as a strategic area for the European Union. We have a parliamentary term to, on one hand, strengthen economic, political, and social ties, and on the other, to reinforce both regions’ commitment to sustainable development and respect for human rights."
