The Mercosur trade agreement is a bad compromise

Heidi Hautala, Member of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, comments on the political agreement on the free trade agreement with the Mercosur states (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay):

„The Mercosur trade agreement is a bad compromise and it is comes at the wrong time when there is an increasing demand for sustainable development.

Lip service on the Paris climate agreement is doing nothing more than serving the image  
of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Free trade agreements need to guarantee enforceable standards for social rights, environmental and climate protection and against even growing deforestation, social dumping and land speculation.
 
The heads of states and governments once again do not take the chance of fair, equitable and sustainable global trade. The price for the Mercosur agreement will be paid by farmers, the environment and the climate.“
