Białowieża forest: protect Poland and Europe's green lungs
European Court of Justice
The Advocate General of the European Court of Justice has today presented his opinion that the forestry management decisions taken by Poland concerning Białowieża forest infringe EU law. Please find below a reaction from the Greens/EFA group co-presidents. Further detail is available on the ECJ website: https://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2018-02/cp180013en.pdf
Greens/EFA co-president Ska Keller:
“The Polish government wants to sacrifice centuries-old trees for short-term gain. It is good that the Advocate General has made clear that logging cannot continue. We must protect Poland and Europe's green lungs and support the many conservationists and scientists who have protested against deforestation in this unique World Heritage Site.”
Greens/EFA co-president Philippe Lamberts:
“This is not just a matter of conserving our natural environment. The actions of the Polish government have again brought into question their support for the rule of law. The opinion of the Advocate General should be a wake-up call for the Polish Government and I urge them to change course and bring their actions back in line with fundamental European values.”
