CAP Reform
Green proposals for a fairer Common Agricultural Policy
José Bové, Martin Haüsling, members of the agriculture committee and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Co-president of the Greens/EFA group will give a press conference Tuesday afternoon on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy.
In Europe, 31,500 industrial farms receive more than €100,000 in public subsidies each per year, for a total of €6.5 billion. By contrast, 5.3 million small farmers receive less than €2000 each per year.
The Greens/EFA group propose that the aid per farm be capped at €100,000. This policy reform would set aside €6.3 billion each year. This represents approximately 5 % of the total EU budget.
This money needs to be used to support the conversion to sustainable farming practices able to anticipate and adapt to the effects of climate change, as well as a rural develpoment policy that supports jobs and communities in rural areas.
