Global CO2 emissions continue to rise
In 2006, global CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels stood at a record level og 8.38 gigatons of carbon (GtC), which is 20% above the level reached in 2000.
Five countries represent over 50% of those fossil-fuel-related CO2 emissions with the US and China accounting for more than one third of the total. The other countries of the top five are Russia, India and Japan.
On a per capita basis, the US has the largest fossil-fuel related emissions in the world: 5.5 tons of carbon per person. It is about 5 times less for a Chinese.
