EU-MERCOSUR : The European Commission forces its way in

The Greens/EFA Group opposes this treaty, which does not respond to the current challenges facing the EU and the Mercosur countries. Following this agreement, the treaty will have to be approved by the Council by a qualified majority of Member States and by the European Parliament.

$300bn climate finance deal clinched in last ditch efforts to support global south

After marathon negotiations, an agreement was reached at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in Baku on developed countries’ financial contribution to climate action in developing countries. The agreement establishes a goal of 300 billion Dollars a year from a variety of both public and private sources by 2035, and sets the aspiration of reaching 1.3 trillion Dollars.

Political pact on Commission marks dangerous willingness to normalise far-right

The remaining Commissioner-designates have been approved by the relevant committee coordinators in the European Parliament. It is striking that the document negotiated by the three political groups does not only have no new elements for the political agenda, but utterly fails to draw a red line on cooperation with the far-right.

Parliament calls for clear commitments on climate finance & the release of political prisoners

Members of the European Parliament are calling on the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku to make clear commitments on climate finance, binding measures on promises made at the COP28 in Dubai and to release all political prisoners in Azerbaijan. The resolution is the European Parliament's mandate for the COP.

EPP Group pandering to far-right jeopardises new Commission

Hearings of the Commissioners-designate

On Tuesday 17th September 2024,  Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented her proposal for the new European Commission. All Commissioner-designates will now face hearings by the Members of the European Parliament between 4th and 12th November. The Greens/EFA MEPs will thoroughly assess all the Commissioner-designates and will cover all hearings live.

All across Europe people are suffering from extreme weather and massive flooding as a result. Meteorologists are pointing out that the warmer water in the Mediterranean, due to climate change, is causing clouds to take up more water, resulting in these heavy rains in Central Europe.
