GREEN INSIGHT INTO EU FOOD POLICY

Animal Cloning: to be worth it the new legislation must include a ban on food from descendants of clones

On Tuesday 8 September, MEPs voted in plenary on the EU legislation on the cloning of animals. For years, Greens have been in favour of a ban on cloning as it has strong negative impacts on animal welfare and biodiversity. It does not offer any advantage to citizens, nor does it have any beneficial effect on food security, food safety or breeding improvement.

New legislation on cloning will includes a comprehensive ban on cloning, and on the placing on the market of food from clones and their descendants.

Greens now hope that this position of the European Parliament will pay off to convince EU government in the Council to agree on a final legislation that include the ban on descendants of clones.

Ongoing Agriculture crisis: Chronicle of a disaster foretold

On 16th September, the European Parliament held a plenary debate with Agriculture Commissioner Hogan and the Council on the ongoing agricultural crisis. This debate took place following the European Commission and Council agreement to provide dairy and pork farmers with a one-off subsidy of €500m to compensate for the economic loss caused by the current crisis in these farming sectors.

The current crisis is further evidence that EU Common Agricultural Policy is outdated. It ignores the real challenges facing farmers and the food sector today.

We need to limit production first rather than look for elusive new markets. This new crisis should be an opportunity to rethink the current EU agri-food system and switch to sustainable production rather than continued industrialisation.

Decision of French court confirms Monsanto guilty of chemical poisoning

The court recently confirmed a 2012 ruling that Monsanto was "responsible" for the intoxication by its Lasso weedkiller and ordered the US giant to fully compensate Francois. The plaintiff, cereal farmer Paul Francois, said the decision proved that "David can win against Goliath...And a giant like Monsanto is not above the law."
