EU must not bow down to far-right fear mongering and populist propaganda on migration

Wednesday, the European Parliament debated the externalisation of migration policies to third countries, such as the recent Italy-Albania deal. The Greens/EFA Group have long called for an approach to migration that maintains human rights and protections for asylum seekers and includes safe and legal pathways for those fleeing war and persecution.

“We must not bow down to rightwing fear mongering and populist propaganda on migration. Deportation deals and overseas camps are an inhumane, expensive and ineffective approach to a complex situation”, comments Greens/EFA MEP Tineke Strik

Christian democrats break ‘cordon sanitaire’ to side with the far right

By supporting extreme far right amendments (on a resolution on the EU budget), the Christian Democrat EPP Group broke with pro-democratic forces in a reckless move that ultimately brought down the entire resolution.

This failed strategy only underlines how collaboration with the far right produces chaos rather than solutions. The EPP is creating a dangerous precedent that jeopardises the pro-democratic and pro-EU majority in the European Parliament and will be unworkable in delivering for citizens.

We will continue to fight to deliver results that make the lives of people better, supporting green jobs, affordable housing and strong climate action with the constructive forces that believe in European democracy.

Azerbaijan: Freedom for Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu and all political prisoners

Tuesday, Members of the European Parliament discussed the persecution of opposition figures, journalists and human rights activists in Azerbaijan, ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku in November. President Ilham Aliyev finances his dictatorship with the sale of fossil fuels.

“The situation for opposition activists, journalists and human rights activists in Azerbaijan is catastrophic. Before international attention turns to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, opposition and civil society are being silenced”, comments Greens/EFA MEP Sergey Lagodinsky.

Backing Ukraine financial support

Greens/EFA Co-President Bas Eickhout met with president of Ukraine Volodomir Zelensky last week: “As the Greens/EFA Group, we stand with Ukraine and will keep up with support for as long it takes. Pro-European forces in this house need to work together in ensuring the financial and military support Ukraine needs.”

Defending our forests

MEPs voted to use the urgency procedure for the Commission’s proposal to delay the application of the EU’s flagship regulation on preventing deforestation in supply chains. “The Parliament must take responsibility and prevent the law from being reopened at all costs”, reacts Greens/EFA MEP Anna Cavazzini

Supporting Ugandan climate activists

Greens/EFA MEP Lena Schilling and others met with Ugandan climate activists who are at the forefront of the fight against the climate crisis. Ahead of COP29, it is time to push for big polluters to pay their fair share.
