The European Union must evolve
60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome
The celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome began on Friday 24 March in Rome. Commenting on the importance of the anniversary, Greens/EFA co-president Ska Keller said:
"This is not the best moment to be celebrating the European Union. With crisis following crisis, and Brexit approaching, the Union faces major challenges. However, the idea of European cross-border cooperation is still the best one that we have for securing a better future. If the EU is to survive, and the people of Europe to regain their enthusiasm for it, it must evolve."
Greens/EFA co-president Philippe Lamberts added:
"The European Union must not serve only the few. We want a social European Union in which prosperity is shared by all. We want a fair European Union with equal rights for all; an open, democratic and free society, with a humane refugee and migration policy. We need now to remember the shared values that have helped secure peace on this continent over the past decades. We cannot afford a relapse into the nationalism that we have seen in some member states."
