Cross-party letter to President Tajani

The Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, upon the initiative of Marco Affronte and Philippe Lamberts, has organised a cross-party letter to the President of the European Parliament, calling on him to speak out against the recent racist and discriminatory remarks of some European political leaders.

The letter is signed by the co-presidents of the Greens/EFA group, Ska Keller and Philippe Lamberts, alongside Udo Bullmann (S&D), Guy Verhoftadt (ALDE), Gabriele Zimmer (GUE/NGL), and other MEPs.

The letter calls on the Antonio Tajani to make an official written statement distancing the Parliament as a whole from the racist, discriminatory and divisive political positions that some political leaders have been spreading with disturbing frequency in recent days.

Italian member of the Greens/EFA group Marco Affronte comments:

"As an Italian, I am particularly concerned by the escalation of aggressive and hate fuelled language that our new Minister of the Interior is pursuing. The inhumanity demonstrated in the Aquarius case, as well as the recent statement proposing to carry out an ethnic census for Roma and Sinti people, is cause for serious alarm.”

Co-president of the Greens/EFA group, Philippe Lamberts, adds:

"President Tajani has to make clear that there is no room for hatred, racism or fear of diversity in the European Union. At a time when many political leaders, here and in the United States, are pursuing alarming and dangerous policies towards migrants, we have to show that there is another face to the European Union, one that is prepared to honour its motto of 'United in diversity'."
