What is your overall impression of how commissioner-designate Šefčovič performed?
Mr. Šefčovič performed better than expected and had a surprisingly detailed knowledge of a broad range of issues. He clearly is an experienced diplomat and avoided difficult questions skilfully
Were there particular issues or answers that stood out – either in positive or negative sense?
We welcomed the emphasis on social issues, enforcement and transport safety. There were also positive answers on external costs following the polluter-pays principle.
However, his weakest answers were on ‘green’ questions, with business-as-usual on environment and climate change. Both his answers on the Lyon-Turin base tunnel and transport effects on public health were unsatisfactory
Do you think he is suitable for the portfolio for which he has been appointed?
He appeared to possess the necessary aptitude and political determination to be a Transport Commissioner and to carry out the specific tasks assigned to him.
Out of 10, what marks would you give him for his performance at the hearing?
On balance, I would give him 7 out of 10
