Greens/EFA concerns about Prime Minister Orbán's visit to Moscow

Letter to EU Council, Commission and Parliament

Dear President Michel,
Dear President Metsola,
Dear President von der Leyen,

There are media reports today concerning the forthcoming visit by the Prime Minister of Hungary to Moscow including a meeting with Vladimir Putin. Hungary currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council.

As underlined by the Parliament, the presidency of the Council plays an important role in driving forward the Council’s work on EU legislation, ensuring the continuity of the EU agenda and representing the Council in relations with the other EU institutions. All EU institutions and its Member States have strongly condemned Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Ukraine's regions. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrant against Mr Putin as allegedly responsible for war crimes.

In this situation, the visit of the Prime Minister of Hungary to Moscow represents a clear breach of the principle of sincere cooperation enshrined in Article 4(3) TEU and massively damages the Union's reputation. We ask you to use all the tools at your disposal to prevent this from happening.

Yours sincerely,

Terry Reintke and Bas Eickhout
