War in Ukraine: War crimes must be prosecuted
War crimes in Ukraine and criminal prosecution will be debated by Members of the European Parliament today. The debate will be followed by a vote on a resolution calling for support to the International Criminal Court in gathering evidence and prosecution, close cooperation with Ukrainian civil society and prosecution of sexual violence, gender-based violence and environmental crimes. A large cross-party majority is expected.
Sergey Lagodinsky, Greens/EFA shadow rapporteur on Russia and substitute member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, comments:
"War crimes in Ukraine must be prosecuted. We welcome the fact that the EU task force is working together with the investigators of the International Criminal Court to secure evidence on the ground in order to clarify and prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. The international community is sending a signal to the people of Ukraine that crimes against international humanitarian law will be prosecuted and those responsible will be brought to justice."
Viola von Cramon, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the Ukrainian Parliament and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, comments:
"The Russian war of aggression on its neighbouring country leaves a trail of massacres, brutality and torture. Sexualised violence against girls and women is systematically used by Russian troops. We welcome this moment of solidarity in the European Parliament and the demand for confiscation of war criminals' assets. Impunity for war crimes cannot be an option."
