Mobile roaming charges

Greens welcome Commission proposal to cap "exorbitant" roaming charges

The European Commission today outlined proposals to introduce caps on roaming charges, notably for data roaming and SMSs. The Greens welcomed the proposals as an important and necessary step for consumers, given the resistance of mobile phone operators to dropping these excessive charges. Commenting on the proposals, Green MEP Philippe Lamberts said:

"The exorbitant prices for data or SMS roaming charged by mobile operators are simply indefensible. We welcome today's proposal by commissioner Kroes, which will ensure European consumers are no longer ripped off when using their mobile phones when travelling in Europe. Industry was given ample time to bring its charging in check but unfortunately has failed to deliver, so, as was the case with roaming charges for phone calls, there is no alternative but to introduce regulatory caps. Hopefully, this legislation will be passed without delay."
