European Council Summit - Brexit

Quote from Philippe Lamberts

On the news that the European Council summit has agreed to delay Brexit, Philippe Lamberts, President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament and Member of the Brexit Steering Group, comments:

"What this summit has done is bought time and space for the next steps. Either the Withdrawal agreement passes next week and the UK has time to arrange its orderly exit, or Westminster needs to set out the next steps. If the vote fails and the British government comes back with a clear plan such as an election or a second referendum then we cannot stand in the way of a democratic process. However, that will mean a longer extension and the UK will have to take part in the European elections, which we would welcome. Theresa May's strategy of running down the clock has utterly failed and if she cannot find another strategy then someone else will have to, which can be the House of Commons itself."
