EU must reject Trump's "every man for himself" approach
Trump trade tariffs
The European Parliament is today debating US President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium.
Greens/EFA co-president Ska Keller comments:
"Trump isn't just threatening trade tariffs, he wants to tear up the entire international order. Whether it is leaving the Paris Climate Agreement, threatening the Iran nuclear deal, or bypassing the WTO, he is pushing an every man for himself agenda that would cause severe pain. In the long term, everyone loses in a trade war and the EU must robustly defend multilateralism, without escalating the conflict."
Greens/EFA trade spokesperson Yannick Jadot adds:
"The European Commission should immediately refer Trump's actions to the WTO. But that can't be the full extent of Europe's response. We must take targeted and appropriate measures to protect EU jobs and industry based on resource and carbon efficiency and show Trump that we will not allow him to cause such economic harm unchecked. The crisis shows the need for the EU to have its own industrial policy so that we are less susceptible to these destructive tactics."
