European mobility week

Greens present new strategy on changing how we get around

The Greens are organising a number of actions during European mobility week to raise awareness about 'soft mobility' and these will also be presented during this press conference.

Key demands of the Greens include the rapid introduction of a kerosene tax and an emissions trading scheme for airlines, as well as a sustainable concept for 'urban mobility', encouraging people to walk, bike, take public transport and/or participate in car-sharing and carpooling initiatives. This will have clear knock-on benefits for the overall quality of life in cities.

Green MEPs and staff members will be joined by Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx as they cycle to Strasbourg for the next session of the European Parliament, setting off on European car-free day, Friday, 22 September at noon. The details of this action will also be presented at the press conference.

Details of the press conference:
When:Friday, 15 September 2006 at 10.30 a.m.
Where:Briefing Room, PHS 0A50 Press Centre, European Parliament, Brussels
Speakers:Michael Cramer MEP (Germany), Eva Lichtenberger MEP (Austria)
